Why I Became a Lawyer

September 6, 2017

Although I briefly flirted with the idea of following in my father's footsteps and becoming a physician, I knew relatively early on that I was meant to be a lawyer.  I was a member of the moot court team in high school, and my first victory came when I obtained an acquittal for Julius and Ethel Rosenberg. I still remember the excitement I felt that day. I liked winning, and well over twenty years later, I still get the same adrenaline rush when I win for my clients.

Nonetheless, most attorneys, including yours truly, spend well over 90% of their career outside of a courtroom. Therefore, there has to be more to the practice of law than trying to convince a jury to agree with my position.  For me, that's helping others find a solution to their legal problem(s).

My father was a surgeon, and, during my formative years, I observed how the medical treatment he provided to his patients greatly improved their lives.  Now the truth is that none of my father’s patients consciously chose to have an injury or other medical problem. Instead, they needed medical treatment to alleviate a problem that affected their everyday lives.

Although the individual needs are, obviously, quite different from those found in medicine, the same principle applies to the legal profession.  No one volunteers to suffer injury in an automobile accident and/or while working on a job site.  Furthermore, I’ve never met an individual who told me that their goal in life was to lose their home and/or all their earthly possessions to a creditor. Nonetheless, these problems arise in lives of individuals every day.  It is my hope that, if you are one of these unfortunate individuals, you will let me work with and for you to find a solution to your legal problems.
